The Michael Clarke Recreation Centre recently brought inclusive sport to life when it hosted Heroes with Ability, a free, all-abilities multisport gala day.
“Hosting this gala day with the Heroes with Ability team allowed everyone to feel included and celebrated while getting involved with sport,’’ said Alecia Ebersole, manager of the Liverpool sports facility.
“It’s the third year we’ve partnered with them, and it’s fueled our desire even further to provide opportunities for people living with disability.
“The live music and cheering from participants on the grandstands brought so much energy and excitement to the day.
“It was great to see that movement in all forms fosters joy and connection.”
Heroes with Ability were formed to inspire, teach and motivate communities in all aspects of health and wellbeing, social inclusion and community awareness for people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
They make regular visits to Michael Clarke Recreation Centre on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, between 9am and 12pm.
Belgravia Leisure and Michael Clarke Recreation Centre sponsor Heroes with Ability.
Several ambassadors attended to support and run the most recent gala day program, alongside Heroes with Ability team members and volunteers.
“Sport is of vital importance to many communities, and it is our honour to work with Aboriginal people and people of all abilities to bring their sporting dreams to reality,” says Indigenous ambassador Todd Dorward, who attended the gala day.
As part of the day’s celebrations, participants received medals and winners were awarded with a place on the gala day shield.
Marco Quintao and George Tonna, the founders and facilitators of Heroes with Ability, also took part in the gala day.
