Macarthur FC have dropped to seventh on the A-League ladder after their 1-0 defeat at the hands of new franchise Auckland FC on Sunday afternoon.
It was the third loss so far this season for the Bulls, who started the season with a bang, a 6-1 demolition of Perth Glory at Campbelltown Stadium.
Against Auckland at Allianz Stadium, the Bulls had plenty of chances to score goals, but it was a case of so close, yet so far on numerous occasions.
Young forward Ariath Piol – who looks like a terrific prospect – terrorised the Auckland defence in the early stages of the game but just couldn’t finish the move with the ball at the back of the net. [Piol is pictured above)
Indeed, for die hard Socceroos fans this game had a sense of déjà vu.
The national team couldn’t buy a goal despite creating a lot of opportunities in the World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia, and it was the same for the Bulls on Sunday.
It’s like we just can’t produce Australian footballers who have a knack for scoring goals.
That said, the Bulls’ transition from the back was clever, and patient, and constantly exposed the defence of the New Zealanders.
But it was the Kiwis who finished off a well constructed raid with a goal about 33 minutes into the first half.
Nevertheless, Bulls fans would have been confident that their team would score a goal or three sooner or later.
Unfortunately, that goal never came and the team got on the bus without any points from the match.
Hopefully they will turn it around this weekend in the round six fixture back home at Campbelltown Stadium.
The Bulls will host the team coming last on the ladder, Brisbane Roar, this Saturday. Kick off is scheduled at 7.35pm.
Another 6-1 rout anyone?
