Brett Hodgson, a member of the premiership winning Wests Tigers team of 2005, has returned to the club as assistant coach to Benji Marshall.

A Campbelltown junior who played NRL with Western Suburbs Magpies, Hodgson played a key role in the 2005 grand final.

He was a fullback with speed to burn and also had a deadly boot, his conversions turning possible defeats into unlikely victories for Wests Tigers during that fabulous season.

Hodgson will be at the club for the next two seasons.

He has just spent two years as head coach of Hull FC in the English Super League, and more recently as an assistant coach with the Wallabies.

Hodgson’s appointment completes an extensive recruitment process, both in Australia and abroad, which included interviews with seven other highly qualified candidates.

Wests Tigers head coach Benji Marshall says it’s exciting to have Hodgson returning to the coaching staff.

“Brett has experience both as a head coach and an assistant coach, across both codes, and he will be a great addition to our coaching team,” Marshall said.

“He is honest, hardworking, and has a great knowledge and feel for the game.”

Hodgson says he’s eager to return to the club and wants to make a difference.

“I’m very excited to be working with Benji and the coaching staff to deliver a high-performance program,” he said.

“We have an outstanding group of young, talented players, and the squad will be strengthened with the addition of some high-quality new signings.

“I’m looking forward to contributing as we build a successful future for this great club.”

Pre-season training for next season will commence in the first week of November.
