How Macarthur police officer of the year keeps us safe

Mathew Hunt may have been joking last night when he said that if he wasn’t a police officer he may consider a career as an exotic dancer.

Leading Senior Constable Mathew Hunt, who works in the Campbelltown proactive team, made his quip after winning the crime prevention category at the 2024 Rotary clubs of Macarthur police officer of the year awards.

The other categories are probationary constables, general duties, unsworn officers, detectives and highway patrol.

Constable Hunt went on to be named 2024 Macarthur police officer of the year, pictured above with the trophy.

And judging by his resume, he was born to be a police officer. He is clearly someone who is making a difference in his chosen profession – in just one year, 2023, he was involved in more than 420 arrests.

Constable Hunt, who joined the NSW Police in December 2009, has a “phenomenal ability to identify and arrest the people who are causing harm in the community’’.

“He has an incredible memory of people and has made it a habit to review CCTV and intelligence reports to identify people,’’ said the citation for his nomination for an award.

“His performance with regards to arrests has had a dramatic impact on property theft crime in the command.

“He works tirelessly to keep the community of Campbelltown safe,’’ the citation said.

Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss and several councillors, as well as the federal member for Macarthur Dr Mike Freelander attended the presentation at Wests Leagues Leumeah and presented some of the awards (pictured above).

Assistant Police Commissioner Brett McFadden and Campbelltown command Superintendent Grant Healy were also in attendance last night.

The category winners for 2024 were:

  • Probationary constables: Nicholas Franolic, Camden Police;
  • General duties: Constable Esmarelda Reyes Vega, Camden Police;
  • Unsworn officers: Christine Van Hilst, Campbelltown Police and Melanie Thompson, Camden Police;
