The collapsed Downes Bridge on Brownlow Hill Loop Road will be replaced with a concrete bridge that will cost more than $2 million.

The new bridge across the lower Mount Hunter rivulet will be 10m wide and 16m long.

Road alignment, a safe pedestrian access, increased volumetric capacity and general access for heavy vehicles will be part of the project.

This month the Federal Government has announced $1 million towards this vital transport project n the Macarthur region.

“We welcome this $1 million funding towards the replacement of the collapsed timber bridge, Downes Bridge on Brownlow Hill Loop Road, with a two-way concrete bridge that will maintain general access for heavy vehicles, straighten the road and allow for pedestrian access,” said the Mayor of Wollondilly, Matt Gould.

“We appreciate the support from the Australian Government to progress this priority project, and look forward to continuing to partner with them and advocate for future upgrades that will have a lasting impact in our community.”

Labor’s NSW Senator Deborah O’Neill noted that the Macarthur region is one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

“We’re delivering funding where it’s needed to ensure that our local road network remains fit-for-purpose,’’ Senator O’Neill said.

“This $1 million being delivered to Wollondilly Shire Council will support replacing the collapsed Downes Bridge with a more durable and safer structure to keep people safer on our roads.

“This project will improve this key freight route in the Macarthur region, increasing the productivity and safety of heavy vehicle operations.’’
