Another Anzac Day has come and gone, but not before reminding us that despite gloomy predictions a few years ago it is becoming more popular every year.
Both the crowds and the number of marchers across outer South West Sydney were up on last year, defying all the doomsayers.
Large turnouts were recorded for both dawn services and marches in Campbelltown, Camden and the Wollondilly Shire.
The sentiments expressed yesterday echoed with each speaker and boiled down to two parts: remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country and thanking those currently serving in our defence forces for keeping us safe.
But while the dawn services start, quite rightly, with a solemn approach, eventually the day has us relaxing with a beer or two with mates, followed by lunch and maybe even a dabble with a two up game on the only day of the year it is legal.
“It was an honour to attend today’s Anzac Day service at Mawson Park,’’ said the Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss.
“Today is a day to honour the veterans in our community and remember the men and women from Campbelltown who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
“Thank you to City of Campbelltown RSL Sub Branch for organising today’s event and to everyone who came out to support our veterans at the service and Queen Street march.’’
The federal member for Macarthur, Dr Mike Freelander echoed Cr Greiss’ words.
“Today, we are reminded of the spirit of the Anzacs and their qualities of courage, mateship, endurance and sacrifice; all of which continue to beat in the hearts of all Australians today,’’ Dr Freelander said.
“I acknowledge our current and former ADF personnel for their service, as well as their selfless service to defend and protect our way of life.’’
Councillor Darcy Lound summed it all up with: “Very humbling to be out at the Anzac Service at Campbelltown this morning. Thank you to all that have served and currently serve to keep our borders safe and give us a great country to live in.’’
