South Western Sydney clubs are expected to show keen interest in funding for projects that make sport more welcoming and equitable for women and girls.

Women’s sport has come a long way, but it needs funding like this, the $200 million Play Our Way program, to fully catch up with men.

“A Play Our Way grant will ensure that women and girls in our community have access to the sporting facilities and equipment that they need to participate and thrive,’’ says the Member for Werriwa, Anne Stanley.

“Our community has a strong and diverse range of sporting organisations, and we want to see them grow.

“The Albanese Government is supporting local sporting organisations, and making sport more safe, equitable, accessible and inclusive,’’ Ms Stanley said.

Federal sport minister Anika Wells agrees: “For every two men who play sport, only one woman does and too many girls drop out of sport,’’ she says.

“Our $200m fund will not only help women and girls maintain better physical and mental health but will contribute to a sporting culture that treats women with equality, fairness and respect.

“By driving gender equality in sport, Play Our Way will not only help women and girls to enjoy sport for life but make our communities fairer, more inclusive and more harmonious.”

Applications for the Play Our Way program are now open, with grants available in two categories, facilities and participation and equipment.

The grant program was designed with the assistance of experts across sport and government, including advice from sport legends such as Liz Ellis, Lauren Jackson, Tal Karp and Madison de Rozario.

Applications will close 2pm on April 29; visit GrantConnect to apply and for more information.
