When you consider that he has been in the NSW parliament for just seven months – and his youthful age – Nathan Hagarty can fairly be described as a whipper snapper.
Be that as it may, last week the Member for Leppington was duly appointed as the new Government Whip for the NSW Labor Government.
The announcement follows the appointment of former Minns Government Whip, Steve Whan, to Minister for TAFE, Skills and Training, pictured above (right) with the Leppington MP.
Mr Hagarty’s appointment to such an important parliamentary role could be a signal that he is headed for higher honours in the first NSW Labor Government since 2011.
The man himself said he was humbled by the appointment and understands the great responsibility the position holds.
The appointment became effective on Tuesday, October 19.
“I am incredibly humbled to have been appointed Government Whip,” Mr Hagarty said afterwards.
“I want to thank all my colleagues for their support and to the outgoing Whip and new Minister for TAFE, Skills and Training Steve Whan MP for his service.
“Being chosen as the Government Whip is a tremendous honour and an incredible privilege.
“I am ready to embrace this responsibility with dedication and enthusiasm.”
Mr Hagarty cuts his political teeth in the rough and tumble of Liverpool Council.
He stood for mayor at the last local government elections in December 2021, where he was beaten by Ned Mannoun for the top job.
Then Mr Hagarty won preselection for the new seat of Leppington, where he went on to record a handsome victory in March this year.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
