If the name of the Labor candidate for Holsworthy rings a bell there’s a good reason or two for that.
Mick Maroney represented Australia in the sport of triathlon at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland 1990.
But he is also the brother of legendary long distance swimmer Susie Maroney.
Mr Maroney, who launched his campaign on Saturday at the Moorebank hockey fields (pictured), will have a tough fight on his hands to win the relatively safe Liberal seat.
In his favour is that the sitting member, Melanie Gibbons, lost preselection to Tina Ayyad, who is the wife of Liverpool mayor Ned Mannoun. Ms Ayyad served one term on Liverpool Council, while her husband was on the sidelines after a controversial term as mayor.
Maroney is a senior school teacher at a local Menai school and has a first-hand understanding of the effects teacher shortages can have on students in our schools.
Prior to teaching he had careers in the NSW Police Service and as a firefighter.
He believes in the expansion of services into undersupplied areas such as the South West.
Maroney says he is also passionate about the positive effects sports can have in our community.
Along with his wife Justine and their five children, he has volunteered in many capacities over the past 30 years, within sport and the wider community.
For this work he was honoured to receive an Order of Australia Medal for outstanding achievement and service.
As part of the Minns Labor team, Maroney says he will deliver improved staffing levels at our hospitals, address the teacher shortages, and create local jobs through building our trains, buses and ferries here in NSW.

Holsworthy is a marginal seat even after the Boundary adjustments.
The fact that a coup was successfully carried out on Melanie Gibbons by the Liberal Party Branch President of Liverpool to install his wife as candidate this election doesn’t sit well with many Liberal Party supporters.
Perrottet wouldn’t be visiting the area 4 times in as many weeks if it was a safe seat, in my opinion.
It’s definitely a seat to watch.
