A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman near Liverpool.
Officers from Liverpool City Police Area Command were called to a home on Greendale Road, Greendale, about 9.30pm on December 30 after a woman was found deceased inside her home.
The woman is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in her 70s.
A crime scene was established, and an investigation launched by Liverpool City detectives, assisted by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
Following extensive inquiries, the woman’s son was arrested the next day at a service station at West Ballina by officers attached to Richmond Police District.
The 41-year-old man was taken to a local base hospital for assessment before he was transferred to a mental health unit.
He was charged with murder and breaching an AVO and refused bail to appear before court on New Year’s Day.

Police say they are concerned with driving behaviour after nine people were killed on NSW roads during an 11-day traffic operation.
Operation Christmas and New Year 2022/2023 started at 12.01am on December 23 and concluded at 11.59pm yesterday (January 2).
Double demerit points were in force for the duration of the operation for speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt, and motorcycle helmet offences.
The Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, together with local police, patrolled roads across the state, enforced all road-related legislation, including drug driving, distractions, driving tired, and any dangerous driving behaviours which put the safety of road users at risk.
During the period, police say they saw a concerning number of dangerous driving incidents, including excessive speed, high-range drink-driving, and reckless driving.
Across the state, police issued 8,118 speed infringements, laid 642 drink-driving charges, 972 drug-driving charges, attended 746 major crashes, and conducted 317,229 breath tests.
Nine people died in crashes over the period, compared to five in the previous year (2021/2022)
In 2022, 288 people lost their lives on NSW roads, compared to 275 the previous year (2021).
