Homicide Squad detectives investigating the death of a toddler near Campbelltown more than 12 years ago have charged a man with murder.
Police have conducted numerous inquiries into the girl’s death.
In 2013, a coronial inquest found that she likely died of a blunt force head injury, however, no one was charged.
In August last year, the matter was referred to detectives from the State Crime Command’s Unsolved Homicide Unit, who established Strike Force Wudgong to further investigate the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death.
Following extensive inquiries, detectives attended a correctional centre at Silverwater and arrested a 38-year-old man just after 9am today (Tuesday, November 2).
He was charged with murder a short time later.
Police will allege in court that the child sustained the injuries, which were occasioned by non-accidental trauma, while under the sole care of the man.
The man was refused bail to appear via audio visual link at Campbelltown Local Court today.
The facts of the case are that at 11am on Friday, September 25, 2009, emergency services were called to a medical centre on Nardoo Street at Ingleburn, following reports a 21-month-old girl was unresponsive.
The child was treated at the scene by specialist NSW Ambulance paramedics for suspected head injuries before being airlifted to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a critical condition.
The infant’s condition continued to deteriorate, and she died five days later on Wednesday, September 30.
