If you’re thinking of running for council, this is for you: Campbelltown Council will host two candidate briefing sessions ahead of the 2021 NSW Local Government elections on September 4.

The first will be held tomorrow, June 24 in the council chambers, with the second scheduled for June 30 and via online.

The briefings will be an opportunity for potential candidates to learn more about the role and purpose of local government; the role, responsibilities and expectations of a councillor and the electoral process itself.

The sessions will:

• Identify the key requirements of becoming a councillor;

• Recognise how the councillor role fits in with other roles and levels of government;

• Address key expectations and potential challenges in becoming a councillor;

• Know how the councillor role fits in with integrated planning and reporting;

• Understand key elements of council meetings, including code of conduct and conflict of interest.

The candidate briefing sessions will be conducted by Local Government NSW facilitator Jenny Dowell, who has lengthy experience in local government and in vocational training.

Ms Dowell will be assisted by Monique Dunlop, the Campbelltown Council manager of governance and risk who will provide local context.

Potential candidates are invited to attend either briefing session.
