For years residents of Wilton and motorists passing through along the Hume Highway had to do without mobile phone coverage.
But a new mobile phone tower has been activated in Wilton to put an end to those days.
The local federal member, Angus Taylor, has given the new tower the thumbs up.
The member for Hume said he was delighted to see another new phone tower up and running in Hume.
“Residents in Wilton and those traveling up and down the Hume Highway in this area have waited many years for mobile coverage,’’ he says.
“I’m pleased to announce that the tower is now operating and residents can benefit from new and improved coverage,” Mr Taylor said.
“Since the Coalition came to government we have dramatically improved mobile phone coverage across a vast area of my electorate of Hume whether that be through funding from the Mobile Black Spot Program or working with Telstra to provide coverage to specific areas such as Wilton.”
Mr Taylor said he would continue to push for more mobile service improvements in other areas around his electorate.
“The government will shortly call for applications under Round 5A of the Mobile Black Spot Program. This round will focus on delivering improved mobile coverage in disaster-prone areas,” Mr Taylor said.

Two dairy farmers in Wollondilly have been awarded grants of up to $20,000 to help lower their power bills.
The funding was made available through the federal government’s energy efficient communities program.
Farmers will use the money to upgrade to more energy efficient equipment such as vacuum pumps, cooling and heating equipment or lighting, investing in monitoring systems to better manage their energy use, or having energy audits done on their operations.
Mr Taylor, who is minister for energy and emissions reduction in the Morrison Government, announced the local grants in his electorate.
“Dairy farmers are at the centre of an industry every Australian relies on,’’ he said.
“Their products line our supermarket shelves and fill our fridges.
“With energy a significant cost of doing business in the dairy industry, these grants will help farmers lower their bills and help ensure the long-term viability of their businesses.’’
