In 1971, in their first 12 months serving the Camden community, Meals on Wheels delivered 3,237 meals.
Fifty years later, in the year of the Covid pandemic, this wonderful organisation delivered more than 27,000 meals.
Camden was a small country town when then mayor Bruce Ferguson organised a public meeting in 1970 to form Meals on Wheels.
Fifty years later Camden’s population is more than five times bigger than it was, and is still growing.
On Monday, Meals on Wheels held a small celebration to mark their 50th anniversary of serving Camden and manager, Gary de Jong, says they plan to be around for many more years.
“We are excited about the growth in the Camden area, and are putting in place plans to be able to service the growing population for the next 50 years and beyond,’’ he said.
Janet Rouvas, a client of Meal on Wheels for 15 years, cuts the cake on Monday.
Mr de Jong pointed out that Meals on Wheels are a lot more than just about delivering meals.
“The Camden Meals on Wheels mission is to provide more than just a meal,” he said.
“We help the elderly community of Camden, but our impact goes so much further.
“We help them access social activities and transport support to get them to medical appointments and shopping trips.
“These important services allow them to continue to live independently with the support of Meals on Wheels Camden.
“We also help families, giving them a sense of security and comfort that their loved ones are being cared for,’’ Mr de Jong said.
Camden Meals on Wheels services include delivering meals for clients, wellness checks, social support and transport services, social events and community outreach programs.
