The bush fires have been as bad as it gets, but there will be plenty of things to celebrate by the time the 2020 Australia Day rolls in on January 26.
In Camden they plan to celebrate all those things we take for granted in this great country of ours: backyard barbecues, swimming in the pool with friends, the iconic meat pie and much more.
Camden Council’s 2020 Australia Day party, which attracts thousands of locals and visitors each year, will be held from 9am to 2pm along John Street in Camden and promises to have something for everyone…
- An Awesome Aussie eating challenge, open to residents of all ages;
- A thong throwing competition;
- Face painting;
- A cork hat making workshop;
- A koala cupcake decorating station;
- An Australian animal face mask decorating station;
- Jumping castles for children;
- A number of stalls offering artisan crafts and products from across the Camden area, as well as novel Australiana products and food and drink stalls;
- Australian wildlife display and education program;
- Modern sheep shearing and working dog demonstrations; and
- Entertainment and live music, including Sydney’s premier bush band, The Inland Navigators.
The show stopping street parade along Argyle Street has been brought forward this year to avoid the heat. Set to begin at 10am, the parade will include a variety of floats, semi-trailer trucks and vintage cars.
The day’s celebrations will also include the annual citizenship ceremony to welcome our newest citizens to the Camden area, and the civic awards, to present the five selected community heroes with their prestigious 2020 Australia Day awards.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said the annual celebration provided a great opportunity for the Camden community to get together.
“Australia Day is such a significant day,” Cr Fedeli said.
“It’s when we come together to celebrate all the great things about our nation and being Australian.
“For me that means banding together in times of need, always helping a mate and embracing a strong sense of community and national pride.
“Whether you are new to this country or have been here for generations, the one thing we have in common is our love for Australia and our community.’’
