The Macarthur football community came together on Saturday night to celebrate the annual City versus Country soccer clashes.

Campbelltown City mayor George Brticevic, who attended the event at Lynwood Park, along with Wollondilly Mayor Matthew Deeth and Camden Councillor Cindy Cagney, praised organisers at a subsequent council meeting on Tuesday night.

“The football was great and it was for a great cause, so congratulations to everyone involved,’’ Cr Brticevic told council.

He paid special tribute to Braedyn Evans, the Gunners SC goalkeeper playing for City, who was named player of the match.

“It was a sensational performance from him; he saved so many goals,’’ the mayor said.

City star Amanda Radmilo (Ingleburn), was named player of the women’s match.

All four rep teams played some very entertaining and spirited soccer, with the Country women running out winners 2-0 and City men winning 2-0.

The aggregate result was 2-2, and as last year’s winner, Country retained the trophy for another year.

The event, which was open to the public for a gold coin donation at the gate, raised $3,500 for Macarthur Football Association charity partner, Kids of Macarthur Health Foundation.

The CEO of the foundation, Denise McGrath attended the evening to present the trophies.

Players for the four teams were selected from clubs participating in M-League competitions for men and women across the Macarthur region.

The M-League competitions resume this weekend with the battle for premiership glory a tight affair at the business end of the season.

In the men’s competition, Camden Tigers and Oran Park Rovers are leading the pack after 11 rounds.

The Tigers have won seven matches and lost four as they head to Harrington Park this Saturday to take on local team United.

Second placed Oran Park, who host Narellan this weekend, started the season strongly with a five game winning streak but hit a bump and lost three games in a row.

They have won their last two and seem to be back on track to make a push for the title.

In the women’s competition, the Camden Tigers have had the perfect start, winning 10 from 10.

They take on Oran Park Rovers this weekend, knowing second placed Ingleburn Eagles will be their biggest threat this season.

The Eagles, who have lost just the one match this season, 3-2 against the Tigers, host Narellan in round 11 this Sunday.
