[dropcap]Give[/dropcap] the man in the hat a pat on the back: Macquarie Fields MP and former mayor Anoulack Chanthivong was the only one in the VIP area wearing a hat in the searing heat during Saturday’s official opening of Ingleburn Alive Festival just before noon.
Your correspondent, who wasn’t wearing a hat either, looked across the line of councillors and MPs to see just one hat, that of Anoulack.
Good for him, I say.

One of the best sport journos to ever work in Macarthur, Wayne Cousins, was as cheeky as ever when we caught up at a function on Saturday night.
These days “Couso’’ is the media manager for the Manly NRL footy team.
But many years ago he had left the world of newspapers to work at the Wests Tigers in the same role.
A Tigers man through and through – his middle name is Barnes – I am sure Couso was joking when he suggested the South West Voice should forget the Wests Tigers and cover Manly instead.

Speaking of functions, we can’t wait for this Friday’s Lifeline Macarthur40th birthday gala ball in the Cube at the Campbelltown Catholic Club.
The theme will be 70s disco so it will be interesting to see how many guests raid their cupboards for old platform shoes, flared pants and those ugly shirts with collars as wide as the Nullabor.
It’s almost scary to think that people will go back to the decade fashion good taste forgot.
Of course it will be just for fun and a very good cause so it should be all good.

But it is still early in the week and tonight another big event will take place at Wests Leumeah when more than 300 people check in at the mwlp Jobs for Youth information night. There will be actual apprenticeship and traineeship jobs on offer, which probably explains why so many people have registered to attend after reading about it right here in the Voice.

Great to see Camden Council put in an excellent effort in recognising the outstanding efforts of hundreds of local young people in the 2017 Higher School Certificate.
Mayor Lara Symkowiak held a reception to congratulate the achievements of the 282 students who ended up with either a band five or six result.
Camden High School, Elderslie High School, Elizabeth Macarthur High School, Macarthur Anglican School, Magdalene Catholic High School, Mount Annan High School, Mount Annan Christian College and St Benedict’s Catholic College were the schools represented by the students at the mayoral reception.
“We continue to see a growing number of young people achieving excellent results in their studies, which is a credit to them, their families, carers and teachers,” Cr Symkowiak said.
