Goodbye Chilli Joe and thanks for the Thai delights you served us

Some sad news for local foodies, with the man behind arguably our best ever Thai restaurant hanging up his cook’s apron.

Chilli Joe, as everyone knows the creator of the award winning Thai Chili in Patrick Street opposite the Campbelltown station, hasn’t been in the best of health lately.

After a stint at Wests Leagues Leumeah, Chilli Joe moved to the Campbelltown Bowling Club a few years ago.

But it all started at Thai Chilli in a tiny little space that catered to around 20 people.

It was a BYO joint and the food and atmosphere were great.

I don’t remember why Joe moved on from such a successful spot, but these things happen.

If you’d like to try Joe and Nam’s Thai delicacies one or more time before it all ends on June 30, head down to the Bowlo for lunch or dinner.

♦ State Parliament last week was told there was a very good reason Detective Senior Constable Troy Burchell from Campbelltown Local Area Command took out the Macarthur detective of the year award in the 2017 Rotary Clubs of Macarthur police awards.

MP Greg Warren congratulated all the winners, including Senior Constable Scott Peterkin of Camden who was named 2017 Macarthur police officer of the year.

“Detective Burchell has been a member of the NSW Police Force for 15 years, six of which he has spent at Campbelltown,’’ Mr Warren told parliament.

“Recently Detective Burchell investigated a fraud that had been committed against an elderly member of our community.

“His investigation revealed that the victim had been conned out of her assets, family home and life savings. “Detective Burchell was able to not only recover more than $1 million in cash and assets for the 94-year-old victim but also organise the sanitation of the home, maintenance of the yard and replacement of the hot water system, as well as arrange for the victim to be placed under the authority and care of the NSW Trustee and Guardian.

“Through conducting such a terrific investigation and going above and beyond in providing assistance, he gained a high level of trust and admiration from the elderly victim.

“His wonderful representation as a member of the NSW Police Force is something we all should be proud of and remember,’’ Mr Warren said.

♦ Clinicians and researchers from Bankstown-Lidcombe, Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, Camden and Bowral Hospitals have converged on to the Campbelltown Catholic Club for the start of a two day Health Beyond Research & Innovation Showcase.

Allied health professionals, nurses, doctors and researchers in south western Sydney will discuss health service research, cancer, community health, clinical medicine, biomedical research, mental health and many other areas.

The 2016 showcase was hugely popular with over 600 attendees and this year’s is expected to be just as successful.

♦ It has been confirmed that one of the guest speakers at the Campbelltown City Council Men’s Health Week event at Eagle Vale Central on Thursday, June 15 will be former Magpies and Wests Tigers legend John “Skando’’ Skandalis.

The event will run from 5.30pm to 7pm at Eagle Vale Central, corner of Emerald Drive and Feldspar Road, Eagle Vale.

♦ Last week an emerging Wests Tigers legend, Josh Aloiai, joined staff at Campbelltown Hospital for World No Tobacco Day, which included cooking a barbecue, spirometer tests, anti-smoking resourced stalls and smoking cessation counselling on offer. The big forward is pictured with hospital staff from the day.

♦ Finally, this Sunday the Wests Tigers return to Campbelltown Sports Stadium for their round 14 clash with the Sydney Roosters.

James Tedesco has signed with the Roosters for next year, but I thought it was still unkind to hear a local wag say it will be interesting to see which dressing room “Teddy’’ goes into.

The mayor of Menangle has been upfront about his intentions and reasons for leaving, so people should respect him for that at least if not for the effort he puts in every week.
