The Maryfields proposal needs to be pushed through as quickly as possible to create long overdue local jobs, former mayor Paul Lake has told Campbelltown Council.
“This is long overdue; it’s been hanging out for more than two years already,’’Cr Lake said at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
Council was considering whether to go ahead and place the plan for rezoning on public exhibition.
It had come before it for the first time in June 2014.
The plan proposes the creation of a health and medical business precinct that would create more than 1,000 knowledge based jobs on land bounded by the Hume Highway and Narellan Road.
Retirement living, aged care facility and some residential development form part of the overall plan for the 100 acre site.
Religious orders currently operating on the land would continue to do so into the future.
Councillors voted to proceed with the plan going on public exhibition for a month.
Cr Lake said this was a critical proposal for Campbelltown in providing local jobs for its residents.
“We need to expedite this as quickly as possible to get it done so local people don’t have to travel to work,’’ he said.
“It’s long overdue.’’
Liberal councillor George Greiss echoed Cr Lake’s sentiments.
“What a great proposal this is,’’ Cr Greiss said.
“This is the sort of development we should be getting more and more of,’’ he told council.

♦ Plans for a second access in and out of the bushland suburb of Wedderburn remain in doubt.
Campbelltown Council, which supports a second access road, will liaise with the Roads and Maritime Service of NSW on funding for such work.
Cost of the work may be the main stumbling block as it is estimated it could cost more than $30 million to connect Lysaght Road from the fire trail gate at Wedderburn to Appin Road.
The distance between the two is just under 10 kilometres.
However a second access is critical for residents of Wedderburn, especially in times of an emergency such as bushfire or flooding when the only access is cut off.
Council on Tuesday night voted to continue talking to the State Government about funding support.
