The Camden Campbelltown Ghosts are celebrating a six wicket haul by a 14 year old spinner and a well compiled half century by another rising young star in the round two clash with Blacktown of the 2016-17 Sydney Premier Cricket Competition.
First grade lost for the second time this season but will hope the arrival of former England Test spinner Monty Panesar ahead of next week’s round three clash with Sutherland at Glenn McGrath Oval will turn their fortunes around.
On the weekend, the club’s youngest player, Tanveer Sangha, 14, took 6-14 in just his second game in fifth grade.
Another club youngster, Ji Mills, gave the Ghosts something else to cheer about after he posted 56 runs in fourth grade.
[social_quote duplicate=”no” align=”default”]“Two young Ghosts who have tremendous futures. Well done lads,’’ said club secretary Jason Ellsmore.[/social_quote]
Overall the honours were split after the completion of round two: Blacktown Warriors took the points in first and fifth grades, while the Ghosts were too good in the three middle grades.
• In first grade, played at Blacktown, the home side were too good for the Ghosts.
A solid innings of 99 runs from former Ghosts batsman Simon Keen enabled Blacktown to post 7/255.
Luke Webb continued his good early season form taking 2/36 with captain Scott Coyte bagging 4/54 to create what seemed an achievable target for the Ghosts batsmen.
But it was not to be; in fact it was a batting session the Ghosts would rather forget, being dismissed for just 88 runs.
• Ghosts seconds continued their tremendous start to the season.
Undefeated in the first two rounds, captain Danny Harding praised his young team across all three facets of the game.
Playing at Raby and experiencing the worst of the conditions for the second week in a row, three big scores in the top order established a Ghosts total of 7/271 that proved to be sufficient.
Aaron Yabsley opened the innings with an eloquent innings of 65 runs while Matthew Hudson, batting at four compiled 61 runs.
Harding’s all round performance continued as he took 3 wickets for 25 to lead his bowlers.
Jaydyn Simmons on his return from a season in England, collected 2/23, while another to impress was
Faisal Nasim, whose 3/48 resulted from bowling good pace and finding the edge of the Warriors bats on regular basis.
• In a low scoring third grade fixture, the Ghosts were able to solidly defend a relatively small total of 124 runs, Jack Whitfield scoring 32 of them.
The Ghosts destroyed the Warriors with the ball in the second session.
Captain Pryian De Zoysa (4-20) and Lachlan Inger (3-17) were the pick of an outstanding all-round bowling effort as Blacktown were dismissed for 75 runs at Jim Hanshaw Oval.
• Fourth grade at Raby saw the emergence of local junior Ji Mills into Premier cricket.
The youngster scored 56 of his team’s total of 193.
Supported by skipper Michael Strong (29) after a top order innings of 31 runs from Josh Stewart, Mills gave the Ghosts attack something to bowl at – and that they did.
Josh Stewart backed up his morning’s batting with the ball taking 4/24 as Nick Mortimer bagged 3/11 to see the Ghosts home by 49 runs.
• The Ghosts fifth grade lost by two wickets but much was taken away from the loss as young leg spinner Tanveer Sangha spun six of his opponents out at Whalan Reserve.
A student of the Ghosts Cricket Academy, Sangha finished with 6/16 from nine overs after watching his veteran skipper Mark Richardson score 38 runs with the bat in the morning.
