Underused tennis courts in Macquarie Fields have been converted into a sport hub for basketball, volleyball and futsal.

Campbelltown City Council has recently completed the redevelopment.

It has created what is already a popular new recreational facility for the area’s growing community in the north of the town.

The new community facility, located adjacent to Macquarie Fields Skate Park, will be available to the public seven days a week, with flood lighting facilitating extended use into the evening, even during the winter months.

Funded through council’s 2015-2016 Sport and Recreation Program, the $84,000 redevelopment of the site to multi-purpose courts has helped activate the precinct as a youth hub, offering a variety of popular activities close to where local people live.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr Paul Hawker, said council was committed to providing a range of recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.

“Council has long been investigating opportunities for passive, unstructured recreation facilities across Campbelltown City, and this latest project is a great example of this focus,” Cr Hawker said.

“The proximity of the multi-purpose courts to the existing skate park, education facilities and town centre retail precinct will ensure that it continues to be well utilised and enjoyed by the wider Campbelltown community, and I have no doubt that the new facility is a welcome addition for our younger residents in particular,” Cr Hawker added.

As part of the redevelopment project, and following a professional assessment of the existing tennis court synthetic surfaces as being in excellent condition, Council opted to relocate them to replace the aging surfaces at the Glen Alpine tennis court facility, helping to extend the life of the playing surface at that location and resulting in a cost saving of $68,000.
