There are now 11,000 more trees in Campbelltown than this time last year as the campaign to increase the local tree canopy ramps up.
Last Sunday another 1200 trees and shrubs were planted during National Tree Day at Milton Park, Macquarie Fields, helping to improve ongoing revegetation efforts at the location.
The weekend’s effort by volunteers builds on more than 11,000 trees planted across Campbelltown as part of council’s tree planting program over the past year.
This includes 2000 at Milton Park during last year’s National Tree Day event, with more planned over the coming months.
Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss gave the effort over the weekend and in the past 12 months a big thumbs up.
“Thank you to everyone who participated in National Tree Day this year,’’ he said.
“It was a fantastic event and a great opportunity for people to participate in council’s ongoing efforts to plant trees across the city and improve Campbelltown’s canopy cover.
“The past year has seen a significant number of trees planted and we’ve got more coming up as part of various park and reserve projects, as well as the Cover Up Campbelltown and Grey to Green Street tree planting projects,” Dr Greiss said.
Planting projects over the past year have included:
- Campbelltown Grey Headed Flying Fox Camp – 7800 trees;
- National Tree Day 2023: Milton Park – 2000 trees;
- Cook Park, Ruse – 1000 trees;
- John Kidd Reserve, Blair Athol – 270 trees;
- Queen Street, Campbelltown – 10 trees;
- Queens Jubilee Planting: Koshigaya Park and Therry Road, Campbelltown – 45 trees;
- Moore-Oxley Bypass, Campbelltown – 106 trees.
