The new Brownlow Hill Loop Road Bridge has officially opened on 21 October, delivering a safer and more reliable crossing.
But it also replaces the temporary culvert that had been in place since the former timber Downes Bridge collapsed during a flood event many years ago.
Wollondilly Shire Council Mayor Matt Gould was joined on site by Dr Mike Freelander, the Federal Member for Macarthur, representing the Australian Government, to mark the completion of the project.
Also in attendance were members of the Downes family, along with neighbours, contractors Delaney Civil and council staff.
Mayor Matt Gould said the project was an important investment in local infrastructure.
“The project recognises the history of the former Downes Bridge, with heritage timber carefully removed during construction to be reused as part of an interpretive heritage display,“ Mayor Gould said.
The project was funded through the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads Infrastructure Program, receiving more than $1 million.
Dr Freelander said the Australian Government was pleased to support the delivery of important local infrastructure.
“This is a wonderful outcome for our region that will bolster road safety and accessibility for motorists for generations to come.
“By working together, our Federal Government and Wollondilly Shire Council are delivering important infrastructure for residents.”
