Vibrant public art, improved lighting and ambient music will soon transform the iconic Hurley Street underpass into a brighter and more welcoming gateway between Campbelltown railway station and the city centre.
Construction will soon begin on the $1 million project to transform the underpass, creating a more vibrant, safer and well-connected space for the local community and commuters.
The project is being delivered by Campbelltown City Council in partnership with Transport for NSW through the revitalise – public transport precinct vibrancy grant program.
Renowned public artists L-Fresh the Lion and Gillian Kayrooz designed the artwork installation after a series of workshops with local residents and school students.
“The Hurley Street underpass is one of Campbelltown’s busiest pedestrian connections and an important entrance point between Campbelltown station and the city centre,” says Mayor of Campbelltown Darcy Lound.
“The new artwork will bring the underpass to life with vibrant colours while telling the stories of our community through references to local places, people and community groups,” Mayor Lound said.
“Combined with new lighting, these upgrades will create a more welcoming and comfortable space for the thousands of people who use the underpass,” he said.
NSW minister for transport John Graham commended the project.
“Thanks to the improved lighting and amenities and the creative work of L-Fresh the Lion and Gillian Kayrooz, the Hurley Street underpass will become a safer and more welcoming space for the community.
“Our public spaces should be places we’re proud of and want to spend time in, that’s what this investment in Campbelltown is all about.”
Community feedback has played an important role in shaping the transformation, with creative lighting, safety, public art, maintenance and cleanliness identified as key priorities during consultation.
Construction is expected to begin on October 12 and be completed by December.
The underpass will be closed during construction, with pedestrian detours in place.
