The Federal Member for Macarthur, Dr Mike Freelander, has been a passionate, long-time advocate for rail connectivity from the Macarthur region to the new Western Sydney Airport.
So when it comes to any proposals for South-West Metro extension, he has one simple message to the NSW Government: Get onboard!
After helping organise and lead several community forums with various stakeholders from local councils, state and federal MPs, constituents and business and community leaders, Dr Freelander has helped bolster the case for this important rail project.
He says that with the South West Sydney region continuing to grow at record pace, the need for investment into transport infrastructure has never been more important.
The Federal Labor Government has committed $1 billion to secure and preserve future rail corridors to connect South West Sydney to Western Sydney International Airport.
New rail in South West Sydney would bring massive benefits for local residents, and Dr Freelander believes it is more a matter of when, not if, this project commences.
With cargo services already under way at Western Sydney Airport and with domestic and international passenger flights beginning next month, the need to get stuck in and begin constructing a rail link is crucial for the airport to reach its full potential.
“I’ve long been an advocate for investing in infrastructure for South West Sydney, particularly a rail line connecting the Macarthur region to the new Western Sydney Airport, as we need it and deserve it,’’ says the member for Macarthur.
“Residents who have been here for five decades or five months have all told me that investing in and improving public transport infrastructure in our ever-growing region is of paramount importance.
“I’m proud to be part of a Federal Labor Government that acknowledges the importance of connecting the Macarthur region with Western Sydney International Airport and I look forward to the NSW Government working with us to deliver this project.”
