A Campbelltown TAFE student is taking on the world’s best at the 2026 Global Skills Challenge.

The friendly yet high-pressure competition sees participants from 15 countries test their skills in industry-based challenges designed to mirror real world situations and global standards.

The five day Challenge event is being held in TAFE campuses in the Illawarra on June 24-28.

Australia’s national team, the Skillaroos, includes 38 competitors supported by expert mentors and trainers, with 10 TAFE NSW students selected for the squad after progressing through regional competitions and the 2025 National Championships.

Skillaroo Sam Shedden, pictured above, from TAFE NSW Campbelltown, will compete in car painting.

“Representing Australia is one of the highest achievements you can reach in a trade. It’s not just about doing a good job, it means a lot more than that. You’re representing your industry and your country,” he said.

“I wasn’t sure at first when the opportunity came up at TAFE, but once I committed, it really took off. There’s been a lot of extra training and hard work to get to this point.

“I’ve trained in everything from prepping and masking through to painting, finishing and buffing, so this competition really reflects the skills I use every day.

“There’s a strong creative side to automotive refinishing. It’s not something you can just learn from a textbook. You learn by doing, making mistakes and improving each time.

“I’ve always loved cars since I was a kid, and being able to turn that into a profession is something I’m really proud of,” he said.

The Global Skills Challenge feature 33 disciplines, including carpentry, plumbing, cooking, healthcare, cyber security, graphic design technology, mechatronics, and automotive refinishing.
