The Labor candidate for the Liverpool south ward by-election, Zeli Munjiza, has slammed the Liberal-controlled council’s consideration of a plan that may see Miller Library shut its doors.
“I strongly oppose this proposal. Full stop,” said Ms Munjiza, pictured above.
“What’s being proposed here should concern every resident across Liverpool.
“If Council is willing to shut down one library, what’s stopping them from coming after others?”
Ms Munjiza said libraries are essential community facilities that provide critical access to education, digital services and safe public spaces.
“For many people, especially young people and seniors, libraries are not optional – they are essential,” she said.
“With libraries like Casula and Moorebank serving South Ward, residents deserve to know whether these services are safe or at risk next.”
Ms Munjiza said the issue goes beyond one location and speaks to Council’s broader priorities.
“This is exactly why I’m running – because this Council has lost focus on the community.
“Instead of protecting community facilities, we’re seeing them treated as expendable.”
She is now calling on all candidates in the by-election to be upfront with voters.
“Where do you stand? Do you support keeping local libraries open, or are you prepared to see them closed?
“Residents deserve clear answers before they vote.”
Ms Munjiza reaffirmed her commitment to protecting community infrastructure.
“I will always stand up for our community and fight to protect the services people rely on, not cut them,” she said.
The by-election will be held on April 18. There are 11 candidates running.
