Woolworths has started construction on a new $65 million neighbourhood shopping centre in Austral, one of the fastest growing suburbs in outer South Western Sydney.

A ceremonial sod-turning event marked the start of work for the development, which is set to significantly boost local employment and provide essential services to growing communities.

Located on Eighth Avenue, Austral, the new development will be home to a brand new full-line Woolworths supermarket and six-bay direct to boot service, a new BWS and 25 specialty shops, including food tenancies with an outdoor dining area to service the rapidly expanding local population.

It will also include parking of 317 vehicles, four EV charging stations, and more than 820 solar panels across the centre’s rooftop, which will offset more than19 percent of the development’s energy needs.

The centre is projected to create 200 jobs during the construction phase, and approximately 150 new, ongoing jobs once the supermarket opens its doors in September next year.

A ceremonial sod turning on Friday (pictured above) marked the official start of construction. It was attended by MPs Anne Stanley, (Federal Member for Werriwa), Nathan Hagarty, (State Member for Leppington), and Liverpool Council representatives.

“Our new Austral development represents another step in the Woolworths Group’s ongoing commitment to investing in Greater Western Sydney, and the growth of local communities,’’ said Woolworths NSW/ACT state manager for development Wes Dose.

“The new centre will foster job growth and provide this growing community with convenient access to fresh, quality food and everyday essentials as well as other services.”

The Austral development is one of several major investments Woolworths has made lately in Western Sydney, including its first automated customer fulfilment centre.
