As sweeping national aged care reforms come into focus, CatholicCare is taking the lead locally, hosting a free community event, Ageing with Confidence to support older people and drive conversation about ageing well.
It will be held in Campbelltown Catholic Club next Wednesday, July 23, from 10 am to 1pm.
Robert Fitzgerald, the Age Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission, will deliver the keynote address.
The morning will also feature practical advice, information stalls and Q&A around pressing issues such as ageism, elder abuse, and how older people can maintain independence and choice.
“Now more than ever, older Australians deserve to be at the centre of decisions that affect their lives,” says Michael Austin, CEO of CatholicCare Diocese of Wollongong, which covers Campbelltown.
“With the aged care system undergoing historic change, this event is about putting people at the heart of that reform.”
The event comes as the federal government prepares to roll out a new Aged Care Act and the Support at Home program, reforming in-home aged care to help older people live independently at home for longer.
“The reforms signal a shift toward more personalised, preventative support,” Mr Austin said.
“This aligns strongly with the work CatholicCare has been doing for many years in delivering community aged care that respects the voice, values and dignity of older people.”
Commissioner Fitzgerald, a prominent advocate for older people’s rights, will speak on the urgent need to address structural ageism, protect against elder abuse, and positive ageing.
“It’s not ageing itself that creates barriers, but the societal attitudes and structures that discriminate based on age,’’ Commissioner Fitzgerald said.
“We must shift focus from age to the systemic biases that limit opportunities, rights and dignities for older Australians.’’
Ageing with Confidence is open to older people looking to stay independent and plan ahead, families, friends and carers who are seeking support, and health and aged care professionals.
