With men’s competitions washed out across the Illawarra District Rugby Union (IDRU), the Harlequins enjoyed a rest on the weekend.
But as our rugby correspondent Andrew Choice reports, the Harlequins women’s side did get on the playing field against the reigning Division 1 champions Sydney University in wet and muddy conditions at Wills Ground.
In a highly competitive game, the two sides were locked up at 7-all at half time.
The second half continued with Harlequins dominating the premiers in the forwards, and looking a good chance to snatch the premiership points.
However, a couple of defensive errors late in the game saw victory slip away from the courageous Harlequin girls.
The final score was 26-17 in favour of the premiers.
The game saw the return of Wallaroo Sally Fuesaina to the Harlequins.
Fuesaina is working her way back from injury and hoping to be included in the Wallaroos world cup squad later this year.
Her player of the match award against Uni is a sign that she’s heading in the right direction.
It is also worthy of mention that Arwen Patrickhas been selected for the Samoan women’s squad.
Arwen has been playing well week in and week out for Harlequins and this is a wonderful reward for an outstanding season to date.
But we should not take away from the rest of the girls who are improving each week, and this was an outstanding effort from the young side.
This weekend the men take on the reigning premiers Shoalhaven at the Campbelltown Showground on Saturday afternoon.
This should be a blockbuster with competition leaders Harlequins taking on the reigning premiers.
Harlequin women will head to Parramatta to take on the Two Blues.
