The Flagstaff Group has received funding from the Australian Government Department of Social Services to support people with disability join community, sport and social programs.

The new social inclusion program – called We Belong – promotes social inclusion for both people with disability and the community around them.

Co-designed by individuals with lived experience and knowledge, the program will highlight the stories of people with disabilities who have faced barriers to community participation, while raising awareness of key inclusion issues.

“This program equips both people with disabilities and community organisations to create inclusive and welcoming environments,’’ says Rodney Von Clark, CEO of Flagstaff.

“Our goal is to help individuals of all abilities become active participants in groups, whether it’s through hobbies, sports, clubs or other community based activities.

“One of the key tools we’re using is storytelling. By sharing personal stories, we can help break down barriers and foster inclusion.

“There are many ways for individuals to share their stories, and in doing so, people build the skills and confidence to address the challenges they’ve faced.

“Through the We Belong initiative, we will use videos, podcasts, presentations and other tools to reach a broad audience and raise community awareness,’’ he said.

“Focus groups will inform our process to create tools and resources for the benefit of people with a disability, families, carers and organisations in the community.’’

The activities planned include:

Storytelling and the art of conversation – helping to build confidence and capacity;

Body expression – using facepainting, body art, dancing, mime and other art forms to recount personal journeys;

Puppetry – a safe medium to portray experiences.

We Belong will also interact with other Flagstaff programs, including Access2Work and School to Work.

Flagstaff, whose premises in the Macarthur region are located in Smeaton Grange, is seeking the input of community groups via a three minute survey available at the link below.
