Just when you thought the footy season was over, here comes some exciting rugby, starting this Saturday at Campbelltown Showground, home of the mighty Harlequins.

Running rugby is wonderful to watch, and even more so when players from the Pacific islands have got the ball in their hands.

And that’s exactly what will be on offer for fans over four Saturdays when the Pacifica Rugby tournament hits Campbelltown.

The tournament will feature teams representing the Pacific nations of Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands in men’s, women’s and under 19s teams.

“This is a high quality tournament that is part of the NSW rugby program,’’ says Andrew Choice from the Campbelltown Harlequins rugby club.

“At the end of the tournament a Pasifika team will be selected,’’ he said.

“This team will then play the NSW Waratahs in the new year right here at the Harlequins home ground.’’

While the tournament will include Shute Shield players, local players will also be given the opportunity to lock horns with super rugby aspirants.

From a coaching perspective there will be a number of high profile and aspiring coaches such as Mark Gerrad and Phil Blake involved with the teams in this tournament.

“The Pacifica fixtures and programs are getting a higher profile on the Australian Rugby program at both a junior and senior level,’’ says Andrew Choice.

“This ensures the next four Saturdays will offer some exciting rugby at Campbelltown Showground,’’ he said.

The action will kick off at 9.30am and continue until 5pm every Saturday from September 28.
