Local MP Judy Hannan has announced that after years of inaction a signalised crossing will be installed along Argyle Street, Picton to increase pedestrian safety around the high school.
Ms Hannan, pictured above outside the school, said work was due to start this weekend.
“The installation of traffic signals will make the journey to school for many of the 1000 students attending Picton High School safer and easier when crossing the busy road,’’ Ms Hannan said.
“The new signals will also strengthen the 40km/h speed zone surrounding the school during drop off and pick up times.’’
Delivering the new signals comes after a development agreement between Wollondilly Council and the Department of Education to improve pedestrian safety around the newly redeveloped school, with Argyle Street being an important thoroughfare through the Picton township.
Work on installing the new signals will take place between Sunday, May 5 and Sunday, June 2.
During this time, there will be a single lane closure on Argyle Street between 6pm and 5am, weather permitting.
A reduced speed of 40km/h will be in place for the safety of workers and road users while traffic controllers will be in place for safe vehicle movements.
The new lights will be operational by the middle of the year.
“The Department of Education is funding this much welcomed initiative that will improve safety for parents and students of Picton High School,’’ Ms Hannan said.
“I thank the department and minister for roads John Graham for listening to the residents who have called out for this crossing for so long.
“I also thank the community for raising this with me and with their support we have won an argument that has gone on for decades with RMS.
“While most motorists strive to do the right thing, having traffic signals will give motorists and students clear guidance on when it is safe to cross the busy thoroughfare,’’ the Wollondilly MP said.
“This is particularly important for the only state high school in the Wollondilly Council area and on such a busy road and no alternatives at pickup and drop off times.’’
Go Judy Go 👍
As long as the students use them correctly and not just cross over elsewhere.
