Residents of the Whiddon Easton Park residential aged care facility in Glenfield have been awarded a highly commended place for their spectacular gingerbread village display, pictured above.
The Glenfield residents, along with those in all 23 Whiddon aged care homes across NSW and Queensland, were invited to share in the Christmas spirit by building their own edible gingerbread house – for the chance to win prizes.
At Glenfield, residents had an absolute blast creating not only the gingerbread houses but entire villages.
The astounding tells the beautiful stories of past residents and traditions held dear at Easton Park, including the story of “Snowy’s homemade Christmas’’ cake in honour of his wife and former resident Mary, and the “Gingerbread Cookie Fairy’’ who sprinkles joy with a hand-painted gingerbread cookie with each client’s name to be hung on the Christmas tree.
Since its commencement to bring residents closer together after the pandemic, the gingerbread competition has become a beloved tradition within the Whiddon community, bringing Christmas cheer and joy to residents.
Each year residents and employees across the 23 Whiddon aged care locations work together to plan and decorate their villages, enjoying lots of laughs along the way.
Judging is based on resident participants, a theme or story that represents their home, area and resident and the overall Christmas magic of the homes display.
Judges included Whiddon’s group food services manager and general manager.
Entries closed on December 19 with winners announced two days later.
The festive activity brings together residents and teams to enjoy fun and laughter, emphasising the benefits of connection and relationship-based care.
