When Alex Twal ended a 115 game try scoring drought in round 16 this season at Campbelltown Stadium the wild celebrations went viral.
It was proof, not that any was needed, that Twal, an honest, hard working forward, was a cult hero for many of the long suffering Wests Tigers fans.
Despite his popularity, and indeed value to the team, there were strong suggestions from the usual media suspects that he would be moving on once his contract expired in 2024.
Yesterday, however, Wests Tigers proved the rumour mongers wrong when it announced that Alex Twal has signed a new long term contract.
The new three-year deal will see Twal remain in Wests Tigers colours until at least the end of the 2027 NRL season.
The 27-year-old prop made his NRL debut with Wests Tigers in Round 17 of the 2017 season and has made 124 appearances for the club in seven seasons.
Entering his eighth season at the club in 2024, Twal says he’s excited about the years ahead.
“This club means so much to me and I’m just so happy to extend my stay long term,” he says.
“I made my NRL debut here at Wests Tigers and it feels like family.
“We have so much still to achieve as a club and a team, and so do I as a player. I can’t wait to put 2023 behind us and rip into pre-season training in a few weeks.”
Head coach Benji Marshall believes Twal’s consistency is a key asset to the team.
“He works hard, prepares well, and delivers consistently week in, week out,’’ Marshall said.
“He is a big part of the Wests Tigers family, and we love his commitment and loyalty to our club.
“It’s great to have Alex here for the long haul and we can’t wait to see him continue to improve his footy here at Wests Tigers.”
In other Wests Tigers news, the club’s 2024 memberships will go on sale on Monday, October 23.
