The new Blue Wren refuge opened last week in Camden would support dozens of women and children fleeing domestic violence every year.

Women’s Community Shelter CEO Annabelle Daniel said the organisation was “immensely proud’’ to be delivering this vital infrastructure to the Camden region.

“South Western Sydney is booming with an estimated growth of 2.1 per cent expected each year to 2031, making this the fastest growing region in the state,” Ms Daniel said- at the official opening, which including a traditional Indigenous smoking ceremony (pictured above).

“This means that this area now has additional options on offer to protect the most vulnerable from being left behind and experiencing homelessness as result of family, domestic and sexual violence.”

Women’s Community Shelters provide support to more people by providing crisis accommodation for victim-survivors.

“The Liberal Government is  committed to ensuring everyone has a safe and stable place to live, which is why 87 crisis accommodation services have been expanded across the state,” said the minister for families and communities Natasha Maclaren-Jones.

Liberal candidate for Leppington and Camden Mayor Therese Fedeli welcomed the new refuge, part of a $4.7m funding package for nine women’s community shelters across the Sydney metropolitan area.

“Today is an important day because we know that housing is crucial for women and children escaping domestic and family violence,’’ Ms Fedeli said.

Liberal MP for Camden Peter Sidgreaves, who is also running for re-election on March 25, said the operator, Women’s Community Shelters, was experienced in helping those in need.

“This is significant boost to the services in the Camden region, one that will provide another option for women and children to overcome trauma and safely heal,” Mr Sidgreaves said.
