An unusual election commitment means at least one local candidate has finished the week on a high note.
Sally Quinnell, the Labor candidate for the seat of Camden, has announced a commitment of $75,000 for Camden Musical Society if her party wins government on March 25.
The money would go towards the staging costs of musical performances.
Ms Quinnell says Camden Musical Society does more than give local audiences first class musical show experiences.
The society also develops up and coming local artists, as well as providing a place for production skills development.
Established just before the pandemic hit, the society’s ability to put on live shows was heavily disrupted during the past three years.
Now it’s getting back on its feet, so to speak, and this funding promise couldn’t have come at a better time.
“The Camden Musical Society is a wonderful community group, providing not only great local shows for our community, but also as an outlet and pathway for local kids to begin their musical journey,’’ says Ms Quinnell, pictured above (left) with members of the Society.
“Covid hit our local arts sector extremely hard, particularly the Camden Musical Society.
“I am so thrilled to be able to provide this funding, which secures the future of Camden Musical Society for years to come and enables them to continue to grow, reaching even more wonderfully artistic children and adults across Camden, as well as putting on a terrific night out for us locals.”
Camden Musical Society representative Kerrie Jiear said the money would help them reach their goal of growing the local performing arts scene.
“We are excited and honoured by this proposed injection of funds into local performing arts, especially into musical theatre,” Ms Jiear said.
“We want to present quality theatrical productions here in Camden.
“We also aim to engage with and upskill people of all ages who are passionate about musical theatre in all its forms.’’
