Wollondilly councillor Michael Banasik is almost part of the furniture after 27 years of service to local government in the shire and across the Macarthur region.
He is now the second longest serving councillor in Wollondilly.
Last week he was presented with a service award to mark the milestone.
“Big thanks to Wollondilly Shire Council and Mayor Matt Gould for presenting me with a service award,’’ he said.
“It is a great honour to become the second longest serving Councillor for Wollondilly. I must acknowledge the legendary Christine Towndrow who also had 27 years service,’’ he said.
Cr Banasik was first elected to Wollondilly Shire Council on September 8 in 1995 and has served as both mayor and deputy throughout his 27 years of service.
He was mayor on three separate occasions, in 2004, 2008 and 2010.
Cr Banasik has served on the executive committee of both the Shires Association of NSW and Local Government NSW (LGNSW), and is a past president of the Macarthur Region of Councils (MACROC).
He is currently the chairperson of both the Georges River Councils and the Association of Mining and Energy Related Councils, as well as being the chair of Council’s Environment Strategic Reference Group.
During his time on council he has been particularly passionate about Wollondilly’s historical and natural features such as the Burragorang National Park and Thirlmere Lakes.
In 2011, Councillor Banasik joined the Local Government NSW Honour Roll and was awarded Emeritus Mayor in recognition of his leadership to the shire.
In 2016 he received an Outstanding Service Award for 21 years of service.
