Confidential documents obtained by the Labor opposition have revealed the NSW Liberal Government had planned to slash trains services in West and South Western Sydney.
The documents showed morning and evening peak travel periods on October 23, 2022 – just five months before the 2023 NSW election – were firmly in the government’s crosshairs.
The planned changes, which have now been scrapped, were part of the government’s More Trains, More Services plan, yet they would have actually resulted in fewer trains and fewer services for passengers who mostly live in West and South Western Sydney.
Passengers travelling on the T1 Western and North Shore Line, T2 Inner West and Leppington Line, T3 Bankstown Line, and T8 Airport and South Line would have all faced cuts to their train services.
Campbelltown MP and shadow minister for Western Sydney Greg Warren said the region’s residents have every right to feel furious and frustrated with the NSW Liberals.
“This government is intent on making life harder and harder for residents in West and South Western Sydney,” he said.
“It is abundantly clear that what is good enough for the west, is not good enough for the rest of Sydney.
“This secretive plan would have been a train wreck for our region.”
His colleague, the shadow minister for transport Jo Haylen, said the plan would have caused mayhem throughout West and South Western Sydney.
“They wanted to change their policy from More Trains, More Services to Fewer Trains, Fewer services and the only reason they have shelved it is because they knew it would be political poison,” said Ms Hoylen, pictured above with Mr Warren at Campbelltown station.
“The Premier was encouraging workers to return to the CBD, while at the same time his government was planning to cut train services from Western Sydney to the CBD.”
