Appin Road has claimed another life, following the death of a man in a single-vehicle crash near Gilead last night.

Police say that just after 8pm (Wednesday, July 27), emergency services were called to Appin Road, Gilead, following reports of a crash.

On arrival, officers attached to Campbelltown Police Area Command found a car had crashed into a tree.

Police, with assistance from an off-duty nurse, performed CPR on the driver – a 46-year-old man and the sole occupant of the vehicle – until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, he could not be revived.

Officers established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

A report will now be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

This is the latest fatality along the now notorious Appin Road stretch between Campbelltown and the township of Appin.

Over the past 20 years more than 30 people have lost their lives while travelling along that section of Appin Road.

There have been several campaigns launched by local community leaders in that period to get funding for widening of Appin Road to make it safer for motorists.

And there have been lots and lots of promises for funding from both the state and federal government.

However, until now any improvements undertaken have been anything but major.

And with a big residential estate being established at Gilead, traffic along Appin Road will increase over the next few years.

  1. I have been campaigning about improvements on Appin Road for 30 years and still nothing has been done. Yesterday, Wednesday 11th of October 2023, a 13 year old was seriously injured trying to rush across Appin Road. Whilst this may not be included in the section I have been trying to get upgraded, it’s still a notorious road that desperately needs to be fixed.
